HP ProLiant servers earned best overall virtual performance on 2P VMmark benchmark.   The HP ProLiant DL385 G5p delivered the best 2P performance overall for virtualization with its latest record of 11.28 @ 8 tiles, while the HP ProLiant BL495c G5 was the best 2P blade with a result of 11.23 @ 8 tiles.

See the test results.

The VMware VMmark benchmark is intended to measure the performance of virtualized servers on a system under test (SUT) so customers can compare the capabilities of different platforms for virtualization. VMmark represents the performance of virtual machines within a server running VMware ESX and a set combination of operating systems and specially tuned applications reflecting a typical datacenter environment.

VMware vExpert Awards

Congratulations and thank you to all our newly minted VMware vExperts. Email went out tonight informing around 300 hard-working bloggers, user group leaders, and virtualization evangelists of all types that they had received a VMware vExpert Award. VMware vExperts were chosen on the basis of the contributions they had made to the community of VMware and virutaliztion users in 2008.

We are not publishing a list of the awardees right now. There will be a public vExpert Directory where the award winners will be able to publish a professional profile.

This is an amazing group of people. The amount of intelligence, experience, and energy in the entire list of nominees was humbling. I’m grateful that they have such passion around this paradigm-changing technology. A big THANK YOU from everybody here at VMware to everyone who applied.

Choosing the final list was challenging, but we had a limited number of awards. There were highly qualified candidates who were either: (1) deeply experienced VMware experts, but without as much demonstrated or organized community contribution as others — we need to come up with an award for these guys! (2) great bloggers who just recently started — we hope they’ll keep it up and join us next year; and (3) early adopters with valuable contributions, but before 2008 — and I hope they’ll be able to join us next year as well.

I’m sure we forgot somebody, and I’m going to kick myself when we figure out who. I’m happy to chat with anybody about the process or what you can do to increase your chances next year. (jtroyer@vmware) The online and offline communities have just exploded this year, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

I’m honored to be working with all the vExperts this year. My goal is to help them where I can, make them all more successful in their virtualization efforts, and with a little luck get them big promotions and raises. For those of us not on the vExpert list, I hope we’ll be rewarded with deeper blog posts and white papers, more informed and interesting user groups, and amazing new tools.

Community contributions often happen outside of work, and not everybody can spend their nights and weekends telling people why virtualization is so cool. Thanks again for all the hard work and long hours you put in. It’s going to be a great, great year.

Via VMware Newsletter

We are pleased to inform you that VMware® vCenter 2.5 Update 4 (English and localized) is generally available as of late night Feb 23, 2009.

This update release primarily fixes some important known issues, and further improves the quality and customer experience with respect to VMware vCenter.

For details regarding the new fixes, please refer to the release notes at: http://www.vmware.com/support/vi3/doc/vi3_vc25u4_rel_notes.html (vCenter 2.5 Update 4).

WHAT’S NEW
Guest Operating System Customization Improvements – vCenter now supports customization of Windows Server 2008 guest operating systems.

Performance Overview Charts – vCenter 2.5 Update 4 introduces the Performance Overview plug-in, which provides a single view of key performance metrics for CPU, memory, disk, and network without having to navigate through multiple charts. The aggregated charts show high-level summaries of resource distribution.

To install the Performance Overview plug-in, see Installing the Performance Overview Plug-In in vCenter 2.5 Update4 (KB 1008296).

RESOLVED ISSUES
Specifically, here are some excerpts from the Release Notes “Resolved issues” section:

Storage Information Displayed for ESX Server that Access Shared LUNs Is Now Accurate
When two or more ESX Server hosts access shared LUNs by using different device path numbers for host bus adapters (HBA), the Storage pane in the Configuration tab of vCenter Server displays accurate properties of the LUNs used by an ESX Server host.

In Addition to Virtual Machine Heartbeats the Virtual Machine Monitoring Service Monitors a Virtual Machine’s Disk and Network Activity
In previous releases of vCenter, in an HA-enabled cluster that has the virtual machine monitoring feature enabled with high monitoring sensitivity, the virtual machine monitoring service monitors only the heartbeats of virtual machine. When VMware tools is being upgraded on a virtual machine, although the virtual machine is still functioning properly, it stops sending heartbeats causing the virtual machine monitoring service to restart the virtual machine unnecessarily. The vmware.log file displays the following message: TOOLS INSTALL cancelling tools installation
Starting with this release, to avoid unnecessary restart of virtual machines, the virtual machine monitoring service also monitors a virtual machine’s disk and network activity. If no heartbeats are received within the failure interval, the virtual machine is not restarted unless there was also no disk or network activity for a predetermined I/O stats interval.

ESXi Server Installations Run Out of Inodes and Stop Responding to the vCenter Server
In previous releases, when an ESXi Server host in an HA-enabled cluster is isolated from the vCenter network and reconnected back to the vCenter network, after a while no free inodes might be available for the ESXi Server and the ESXi Server host might stop responding to the vCenter Server and the VI Client. This issue is resolved.
