InformationWeek – VMware-Partner müssen sich spezialisieren
Der Virtualisierungs-Anbieter VMware macht für seine Partner erstmals eine Spezialisierung zur Pflicht. Künftig müssen Reseller, Systemintegratoren, Technologie- und Beratungspartner vertieftes Know-how in den Lösungsfeldern Disaster Recovery, Systemmanagement oder Desktop-Virtualisierung nachweisen.
Der Software-Hersteller VMware verpflichtet seine Partner ab sofort zur Spezialisierung. Bislang reichte es für Reseller, Systemintegratoren, Technologie- und Beratungspartner aus, Virtualisierungskompetenz nachzuweisen und, je nach Partnerstufe, eine bestimmte Zahl von VMware-Spezialisten zu beschäftigen. Mit der aktuellen Neuauflage des Channel-Programms müssen sich jetzt Partner der Stufen »Enterprise« und »Premier« zwingend spezialisieren.
VMware gibt drei Lösungsfelder vor, in denen die Unternehmen vertieftes Know-how erwerben können: Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery, Systemmanagement oder Desktop-Virtualisierung. Enterprise Partner müssen sich in mindestens einem der Bereiche spezialisieren, Premier Partner in mindestens zweien. Der Kernbereich Virtualisierungsinfrastruktur ist für alle Partner Pflicht. »Wir ermuntern unsere Partner dazu, stärker in die unterschiedlichen Lösungsportfolien zu investieren«, betont Jürgen Kühlewein, Direktor der Partnerorganisation von VMware.
Das Unternehmen gibt den Partnern ab sofort neun Monate Zeit, die erforderlichen Trainings zu absolvieren und die Qualifizierung nachzuweisen. Die autorisierten Trainingscenter von VMware sind dem Manager zufolge auf den Ansturm vorbereitet.

Nutzer könnten die Performance virtueller Desktops zudem erhöhen, indem sie einen deduplizierungsfähigen Cache mit einem “Performance Accelerator” auf Solid-State-Basis kombinieren. So ließen sich mehr virtuelle Desktops bedienen und es steige der Durchsatz in großen Umgebungen. Tests von NetApp zufolge lässt sich die Performance dabei um bis zu 70 Prozent verbessern, die Boot-Zeiten um 50 Prozent senken und bei Beschaffung, Platzbedarf und Energieaufwand maßgeblich sparen. Das Rapid Cloning Utility 2.0 und das Performance Accelerator Module sind ab sofort erhältlich.

Yes, it works! Now start downloading the Windows 7 RC and continue reading. Like many of you, the Workstation team scrambled to download the release candidate as soon as it was made available to us. After trying to download it for ½ a day, (MSDN & TechNet crashed) we finally got our copy and started playing with it.
There’s been a lot of buzz flying around about Windows 7 and what better way to try out a new operating system and see how it works than in a virtual machine. I am happy to report that you can run Windows 7 RC in a VMware Workstation 6.5.2 VM with all the great features you have come to love, including file drag and drop, text copy and paste, automatic screen resize, shared folders, and Unity. However, before we go further, I want to remind you that Windows 7 RC, both 32-bit and 64-bit, is not an officially supported guest at this time. We plan to support Windows 7 as a guest OS in a future release. This statement reminds me of the great new Mac ad “Legal Copy”.
By the way, if you do not have a copy of VMware Workstation, now is a great time to download a free trial and give both Workstation and Windows 7 a try at the same time. It’s a great way to find out how well your favorite application runs or application you are developing will run in Windows 7. This is one of those rare times when you can get a Windows OS to try without having to purchase a license upfront.
After going through the process of creating a Windows 7 VM, we decided to share some best practices on how to make this happen with some screenshots and suggestions to make it nice and easy for you. Let’s get started. Based on our initial experience with Windows 7 RC with VMware Workstation, we recommend the following VMware settings:
- In New Virtual Machine Wizard, use the “Typical” Configuration
- The wizard will auto detect Windows Vista, let it run Easy Install for Vista
- Dedicate at least 1GB of Memory
- Use 40GB Disk Capacity if you plan on installing Office and some additional applications
- Recommend that all users create a custom Power Management Plan (details below)
- If you do not enter a Windows license key, watch for the Windows install screen asking for which version of Windows to install

In fact, I have been running my day to day work life out of a Windows 7 Public Beta VM using Mirrored Folders and Shared Applications since the beta was released and it has been working really well with a couple of known caveats that we mentioned at the time. Today, Microsoft released a public release candidate of Windows 7. We have installed Windows 7 RC on a number of Macs from a first generation MacBook Air to a higher end MacBook Pro and Windows 7 RC is really responsive with the default VMware Fusion settings on all Macs we have tried. Personally, I am excited to see the improvements in my day to day use of Windows 7 at work. More important, I am excited that the Windows 7 Release Candidate is the easiest way for you to try out Windows on your Mac for FREE (at least until the beta expires). That’s right, you can download Windows 7 Release Candidate through July 1st and it’s free to use until it expires on June 1, 2010. While VMware Fusion won’t formally support Windows 7 until it is released later this year, the Windows 7 Release Candidate works really well in VMware Fusion 2.0.4 based on our initial testing.

Microsoft will für Windows 7 einen erweiterten Kompatibilitätsmodus bieten: den XP-Modus (XPM). Dabei handelt es sich letztlich um eine “Virtuelle Maschine” (VM), in der Windows XP mit SP3 bereits vorinstalliert ist. Als Virtualisierungslösung kommt dabei laut Microsoft der hauseigene “Virtual PC” zum Einsatz, allerdings offenbar in modifizierter Form: Voraussetzung für den XPM ist, dass im PC ein Prozessor mit Intel-VT oder AMD-V steckt. Virtual PC 2007 läuft auch ohne diese Hardware-Virtualisierungstechniken.
Der XPM wird bei Windows 7 nicht mitgeliefert. Stattdessen steht das Paket als separater Download zur Verfügung. Laufen soll der XPM nur unter Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise und Ultimate (jeweils 32 und 64 Bit). Ob damit gemeint ist, dass die Installation unter den Home-Versionen verweigert wird, ist bislang unklar. Virtual PC 2007 läuft offiziell ebenfalls nicht unter den Home-Versionen, beschwert sich jedoch bei der Installation auf einem solchen System lediglich einmal und läuft dann trotzdem problemlos.
In der XPM-VM sollen sich fast alle Anwendungen installieren lassen, die auch unter XP laufen, Ausnahmen sind in der im Vergleich zu einem echten PC mitunter mageren Hardware-Ausstattung geschuldet. So laufen etwa viele Spiele mangels 3D-Unterstützung nicht – einer der Gründe dafür, warum Microsoft den XPM für die Home-Versionen gar nicht erst anbietet.
Das XP des XPM wird mit aktiver Firewall geliefert, auch die Windows-Update-Funktion ist aktiv. Nach derzeitiger Planung will Microsoft XP noch bis 2014 mit den wichtigen Sicherheitspatches kostenlos versorgen. Wie es danach mit XP und dem XPM weitergeht, ist derzeit nicht bekannt. Ein Virenscanner oder eine Antispyware fehlen dem XP des XPM, Microsoft empfiehlt, beides nachzurüsten – oder noch besser auf Anwendungen umzusteigen, die auch ohne XPM unter Windows 7 laufen.
