Based on the incredible amount of interest on VSAN at VMworld the numerous questions regarding system performance and VSAN specific statistics I wanted to share a couple of utilities that can be used to gain visibility into VSAN performance metrics and counters for  what’s going  one of the golden nuggets included with vSphere 5.5 is the packaging and support of the Ruby vSphere Console. The Ruby vSphere Console (RVC) is an interactive command interface based on the Ruby programming language and the RbVmomi binding APIs for vSphere. RVC is now part of both Windows and Linux versions of vCenter Server 5.5. RVC can now be used to manage, monitor, and troubleshoot vSphere. In vSphere 5.5 RVC ships with a number of Virtual SAN (VSAN) built-in functionalities with focus on:

  • VSAN Configuration
  • VSAN Health Monitoring
  • VSAN Disks Statistics
  • VSAN Performance Statistics
  • VSAN Observer

The VSAN Observer is an RVC experimental graphical user interface utility which displays VSAN related statistics from a VSAN Client perspective. The utility can be used to understand VSAN performance characteristics. The utility is intended to provide deeper insights of VSAN performance characteristics and analytics. The VSAN Observer’s user interface displays performance information of the following items:

  • Statistics of the physical disk layer
  • Deep dive physical disks group details
  • CPU Usage Statistics
  • Consumption of VSAN memory pools
  • Physical and In-memory object distribution across VSAN clusters

Below is a brief demo of the VSAN Observer UI and some of the different screens and information it provides.

VMware Consulting Blog: 3 Steps to Put You on the Path to the Software-Defined Data Center

The software-designed data center (SDDC) was the hot topic at VMworld 2013, which wrapped up this week. Our consultants and the VMworld speakers helped answer lots of SDDC questions, but we know that there are still plenty out there—especially for those of you who couldn’t join us in San Francisco.

To begin at the beginning: How do we define the software-defined data center? As VMware Professional Services Chief Architect John Steiner points out in this video, SDDC is not just virtualization of servers, networks, and storage. He instead describes it as “cloud done right,” and outlines the other processes that allow IT organizations to realize the full benefits of a software-defined data center architecture.

We know organizations are also looking for specific steps to help them design an efficient transition to the software-defined data center. In this second video, John explains three key questions for organizations to answer, pointing out, “It’s not about doing it all at once—it’s about understanding how I can drive virtualization and server definition into all the key components in all my endpoints.”

For more details on getting the full benefits of the software-defined data center, please contact VMware Technology Consulting Services. They will be happy to help!

Morning folks,

Here we have another video live from VMworld 2013 featuring a VMware user from Kansas and he provides a quick testimonial and shares his thoughts concerning the VMware Knowledge Base.

VMworld 2013

One of the great things about attending an event such as VMworld is that it allows people from different parts of the world to meet face-to-face with the people they interact with It on a weekly basis through the online Social Media channels.

The KBTV team managed to catch up with Tony a.k.a @wonder_nerd at VMworld this year. We first met Tony at a previous VMworld event around 4 years ago and here we are meeting again at VMworld. A lot has changed in the virtualization world over the last 4 years. It is a different year and a different venue but thankfully we are still meeting the same great people.

Hope you enjoyed your time at VMworld folks if you were able to attend the event because we sure enjoyed it!

Roll on VMworld in Barcelona, Europe!.

Have a nice weekend folks!
