Today I have the pleasure to present a brand new white paper which was the result of a collaboration between three different teams within VMware. A couple of months ago I stumbled across a great diagram which was developed by Hany Michael, (Consulting Architect, VMware PSO) who is part of the VMware CTO Ambassador program. The CTO Ambassadors are members of a small group of our most experienced and talented customer-facing, individual contributor technologists. The diagram explained an interesting architecture– namely hybrid cloud. After a brief discussion with Hany I decided to reach out to David Hill (Senior Product Marketing Manager, vCloud Air) and asked if he was interested in getting this work published. Needless to say, David was very interested. Together we worked on expanding on the great content that Hany had already developed. Today, the result is published. The architecture described in this white paper is based on a successful real-world customer implementation. Besides explaining the steps required it also explains the use case for this particular customer. Implementing a Hybrid Cloud Strategy

IT has long debated the merits of public and private cloud. Public clouds allow organizations to gain capacity and scale services on-demand, while private clouds allow companies to maintain control and visibility of business-critical applications. But there is one cloud model that stands apart: hybrid cloud. Hybrid clouds provide the best of both worlds: secure, on-demand access to IT resources with the flexibility to move workloads onsite or offsite to meet specific needs. It’s the security you need in your private cloud with the scalability and reach of your public cloud. Hybrid cloud implementations should be versatile, easy to use, and interoperable with your onsite VMware vSphere® environment. Interoperability allows the same people to manage both onsite and offsite resources while leveraging existing processes and tools and lowering the operational expenditure and complexity…

Now that vSphere 6 is available, I’ve run an updated set of tests using this new release, on an even more powerful host, with Xeon E7 v2 processors. A variety of virtual CPU (vCPU) and virtual machine (VM) quantities were tested to show that vSphere can handle hundreds of thousands of online transaction processing (OLTP) database operations per minute.

DVD Store 2.1, an open-source OLTP database stress tool, was the workload used to stress the VMs. The first experiment in the paper was a generational performance comparison between the old and new setups; as you can see, there is a dramatic increase in throughput, even though the size of each VM has doubled from 8 vCPUs per VM to 16:

There are also tests using CPU affinity to show the performance differences between physical cores and logical processors (Hyper-Threads), the benefit of “right-sizing” virtual machines, and measuring the impact of the advanced Latency Sensitivity setting.

For more details and the test results, please download the whitepaper: Performance Characterization of Microsoft SQL Server on VMware vSphere 6.

Instant Gratification for the Always-On College World with Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS)

It’s no surprise they expect the same of their computer labs, courseware and IT support at school.

And they’re not the only ones with on-demand expectations. Faculty want to be able to innovate in real-time – not wait until next semester to introduce new subjects or try out new courseware. Academic leaders want to put education in easy reach of more students with online classes that let them learn when, where and how they want. In fact, 70% of chief academic leaders say online learning is critical to their long-term strategy (Online Learning Consortium, 2014).

The truth is, if colleges and universities don’t offer this kind of dynamic, always-on environment, they won’t be able to attract and retain the students and staff they need to remain competitive. But there’s a problem. Higher Ed IT departments often aren’t designed, staffed or funded to handle the extremely complex IT infrastructure this on-demand world requires.

That’s why we’re seeing more colleges and universities turning to DaaS, or cloud-hosted desktops-as-a-service. DaaS moves desktops and apps into the cloud, where an experienced service provider handles the servers, software and support. Not only does DaaS remove IT complexity, it also reduces much of the IT labor costs. There’s no big capital expense for on-site infrastructure that educational institutions have to worry about.

When we talk to colleges and universities about DaaS, they get particularly excited about how easy it delivers these benefits:

Far Greater IT Agility

Institutions can roll out apps and updates overnight, to any device, at any time during the school term. There’s no more waiting for semester breaks or spring vacation. Instead of updating computers one-by-one, or running a remote program to touch each device from the datacenter, cloud-hosted desktops can all be quickly deployed at once. That means end-users can gain access to an updated, refreshed desktop without any changes to their devices.

24-Hour Computer Lab

DaaS extends computer lab access to wherever and whenever. Students can access the lab at 3pm or 3am, from their dorm, library or even the laundry room. Whatever works for them. And regardless if a student has lost their device, replaced their device, or have multiple devices, they always have access to their educational workspace, without any IT intervention.

Innovate and Adjust Quickly

Colleges and universities can easily roll out or test new courseware, online classes and even majors. Instead of taking months to purchase and configure the enabling hardware and software, you just ramp up the number of active virtual desktops with your service provider. When desktops are no longer needed—if you decide not to continue a class, or the semester ends and you don’t need as much capacity—simply adjust the number of desktops.

Standardized Learning Environment

Students come to school with all types of devices. Chromebooks, Macs, PCs and more. With DaaS, it doesn’t matter what they use. You easily can deliver a simple-to-manage, standard learning environment that provides secure access to all the apps and tools students need.

As one of the largest online universities found by using VMware Horizon Air , expanding classroom access, innovating courses in real-time, and providing the on-demand education students want doesn’t have to be exorbitantly cumbersome or costly. DaaS puts the always-on college world in easy reach of everyone, anywhere.

To learn more about how Horizon Air can help transform campuses and labs with education on-demand, I encourage you to listen to our on-demand webinar HERE.

This is an exciting event for our team as it is VMware’s first year to participate in NCSC, which consists of a career fair, sales competition, and interviews with employers onsite at the competition. During the four-day event, VMwarerepresentatives will be connecting with attendees and interviewing for 10 Inside Sales Representative positions at our Austin, Texas site.

The Inside Sales Representative roles are for recent college grads interested in pursuing a career in technical sales. Inside Sales Representatives will join the VMware Sales Academy in August 2015 and will attend the sales, technical, and product trainings needed to launch a successful career.

If you’re attending the National Collegiate Sales Competition and are interested in learning more about the VMware Sales Academy or life at VMware, be sure to connect with our team during the career fair that runs from Wednesday, April 8 through Thursday, April 9.

We’re also thrilled to have VMware Recruiter, Fiona Condon, chronicle her experiences, in real time, during NCSC on the VMware University Relations (@VMwareU) Instagram account on Wednesday, April 8. Fiona’s VMware journey has come full-circle. After interning on the VMware Inside Sales team in the summer of 2012, Fiona is now back at VMware working as a recruiter on the University Relations team. Fiona organized a Sales intern program in her previous position and found the university realm to be a great fit for her. She is passionate about engaging with students that are starting their exciting career journey and making an impact on their lives.

My teammates and I cannot wait to connect with all of the game-changing talent at the #NCSC2015event. For more information about the conference or our Inside Sales Representative roles, be sure to check out the resources below.
