By Vikas Jain, Director, Product Management, VMware Identity Manager, VMware

This overview of new technology represents no commitment from VMware to deliver these features in any other generally available product or service.

As we enter 2016, we are excited to announce the following features in our cloud version ofVMware Identity Manager for the January release:

  • Improved one-touch SSO from iOS devices using embedded Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC)
  • Device-compliance check at login time
  • SSO to Horizon Air applications and desktops
  • SSO to Citrix 6.x XenApp

Improved One-Touch SSO from iOS Devices Using Embedded KDC

One of the key features of VMware Identity Manager is to provide one-touch mobile SSO that allows users to sign in to applications from mobile devices without entering passwords. Organizations are using this feature in the following scenarios:

  • When VMware Identity Manager is the only Identity Provider (IdP)
  • When the organization is already using a third-party IdP, such as ADFS, PingFederate, or another, but wants to provide one-touch SSO to users from mobile devices

To support this feature on iOS devices, VMware Identity Manager uses Kerberos authentication with a certificate. This requires the mobile device to reach the on-premises Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC), which is accomplished using per-application VPN initiated by VMware AirWatch.

With the January 2016 update, VMware Identity Manager for the cloud now runs an embedded KDC, which eliminates the need for a mobile device to be set up for per-application VPN for reaching an on-premises KDC. (Per-application VPN is when AirWatch automatically establishes a VPN tunnel, hidden from the user, when a given application is launched.) No per-application VPN means less setup for the administrator (no more VPN setup), and more battery life for the user’s device.

How Do I Configure This Feature?

Log in to the administrator’s console, and navigate to Identity & Access Management, then Identity Providers, then Built-in, as you can see in Figure 1. The Built-in Identity Provider is new, and always available in all tenants. It services authentication methods that do not require use of an on-premises Connector.

Figure 1: Configuring the Built-In Identity Provider

Next, click the gear icon next to Built-In Kerberos to configure the settings.

Figure 2: Configuring the Built-In Kerberos Settings

Refer to the VMware Identity Manager Connector Installation and Configuration Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Device-Compliance Check at Login Time

When users enroll their iOS devices with AirWatch, the AirWatch agent is installed on the device and continuously monitors if the device meets compliance rules set by the administrator in the AirWatch console. Examples of compliance rules include that the device cannot be “jailbroken” (removing software restrictions imposed by iOS), and the device PIN cannot be disabled. Whenever the device is out of compliance, the AirWatch agent reports compliance status immediately to the AirWatch server.

Now, VMware Identity Manager includes a new policy rule that checks the AirWatch server for device-compliance status at login time. This ensures that users are blocked from logging in to an application or VMware Identity Manager SSO portal if the device is out of compliance. The user can restore the login after they remediate to make the device compliant again.

SSO to Horizon Air Applications and Desktops

A main feature of VMware Identity Manager and a differentiator from other identity management systems is the ability to support multiple types of applications, such as Web and mobile applications, virtual applications, and virtual desktops. VMware Horizon Air Desktops is a Desktop as a Service (DaaS) that delivers desktops and applications to any device, anywhere.

If you use VMware Horizon Air Desktops, now your users can access the VMware Identity Manager My Apps portal to launch their entitled Horizon Air applications and desktops.

SSO to Citrix 6.x XenApp

VMware Identity Manager has supported Citrix 5.x XenApp published applications and desktops for a while. (Citrix XenDesktop is not supported at this time.)

With this update, if you use Citrix 6.x XenApp, your users can access the VMware Identity Manager My Apps portal to launch Citrix published applications and desktops.

EUC Modernisation – Observations of Success

By Charles Barratt, EUC Business Solutions Strategist

All too often, I witness organisations treating their desktop as a second-class citizen to the datacenter, when in reality the datacenter is the servant to the endpoint. Those organisations that truly transform their end user computing environments do so with three key principles in mind.

  1. Engagement

IT departments often start with technology, rather than thinking about what impact modernisation is going to have on users, their productivity, and the financial model associated with end user IT. Gone are the days when we simply issued users with devices and mobile phones and never spoke to them again until they had an issue. Our end users are now far more tech savvy and operate their own networks at home. They want to be engaged, they want a say on the appropriate application of technology, and they want workplace flexibility. Happy workers tend to stay where they are.

Users deserve to be engaged, and by engaging them early on in EUC transformation you have advocates who are bought into the process and want to see it succeed. Don’t underestimate this vital stage.

Simply put, “Stop starting with technology.”

  1. Integration

It is no longer appropriate to operate end user computing environments in isolation to the rest of the IT organisation. Virtualization stopped that trend from happening with the move of the desktop into the datacenter. As organisations start to consume different application and security models, your EUC environment needs to be close to the action for performance and operational gains.

To fully harness this change, we see organisations starting to build out a centre of excellence containing members that span the many moving parts of an EUC environment from endpoint, applications security, networks, datacenter and operations. In doing so you can be confident that there will not be an overspend on technology, there will be appropriate capacity to support your requirements, and the best experience will be delivered to your end users.

  1. Simplicity

I recently saw the lightbulb moment in one of my client’s eyes when discussing the simplification of application delivery; this is where we introduced App Volumes. Rather than dazzle them with science, a simple demonstration and a discussion around the time tested install process of ‘Next, Next, Next, Finish’ into an AppStack made them realise the world had moved on.

As organisations look to re-architect critical applications, they need to think about simplifying the application lifecycle management (ALM) for legacy applications, and that is exactly what App Volumes brings back to the IT department. The ability to significantly shorten the ALM process from request fulfillment through to patching and updates drives consistency and stability, whilst minimising the cost associated with lifecycle and change processes.

As with all technologies you need to make sure the investment reduces the problem and the financial gain supports the change. The architecture and minimal impact on existing processes places App Volumes in a very desirable place to solve application delivery challenges.

Opportunities to transform the end user computing environment don’t come along very often, but their impact on end user computing is prolific. There has never been a more exciting yet complicated time to be associated in this space.

To use the words of the late Steve Jobs, “You have to start with the customer experience and work back towards the technology”.

Take a look at our end-user computing deep dive series on the blog, which looks at how value can be delivered in application remoting, as well as exploring the Workspace Suite.

New paper on Virtualizing SAP on vSphere on All Flash Storage

Jan 292016

SAP HANA is the preferred database for all future SAP applications. Columnar databases and the in memory capabilities of SAP HANA make it an excellent platform for all SAP applications. Virtualized SAP HANA (SAP HANA) provides significant advantages over Physical HANA implementations by providing flexibility and agility in operating a HANA environment

SAP HANA environments have a large memory footprint with the majority of data in memory. The changes to the memory are constantly being replicated to disk and there can be significant disk activity on the system in spurts. In addition when the system is restarted or there is any high availability event there is a massive requirement for data that needs to be quickly loaded into memory from disk. Due to these reasons, there is a requirement in HANA to have a highly performant IO subsystem. All Flash Storage can be a great asset if used as shared storage for virtualized HANA implementations as they can provide excellent IO performance. This paper looks at the benefits of using virtualization that is backed by All Flash storage for SAP HANA.

Another challenge in SAP HANA environments is the large memory requirement for the HW. In the real world, not all data needs to be in memory. By reducing the amount of data resident in memory there are many potential benefits from a cost and efficiency perspective. SAP HANA since SPS09 has introduced dynamic tiering that can help optimize memory utilization and move the less actively used data to extended tables on disk. In addition SAP HANA SPS10 provides capabilities for multi-tenant capabilities combined with dynamic tiering.

The new paperVirtualizing SAP HANA leveraging All Flash Storageseeks to explore use cases for SAP HANA on All Flash storage to improve performance, optimize memory usage and increase RTO through efficient backup and recovery. We will explore the use of SAP HANA on All Flash storage for the following use cases:
A. Improved performance for data load into virtualized HANA.
B. Optimized write back Performance during regular operations.
C. Streamlined back and recovery for HANA data
D. Dynamic Tiering to reduce memory footprint with warm data on Flash

Updated 3D Graphics Acceleration Paper for View Virtual Desktops in Horizon 6

By Stephane Asselin, VMware End-User-Computing Architect

And Gary Sloane, Consulting Editor and Writer for VMware

We are happy to announce a revision to our white paper on 3D graphics acceleration, Deploying Hardware-Accelerated Graphics with View Virtual Desktops in Horizon 6. It offers clear, concise descriptions of the most common use cases and scenarios.

Virtual Shared Graphics Acceleration (vSGA) provides great consolidation ratios because it enables a single Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to serve a large number of people who have an occasional need for an immersive graphics user experience with advanced graphics applications.

At the other end of the user spectrum from vSGA, Virtual Dedicated Graphics Acceleration (vDGA) gives exclusive use of a GPU to designers, research scientists, and others who have traditionally worked on dedicated—and expensive—standalone graphics workstations. There are several advantages here: In contrast to the older computing model, vDGA puts the vast computing power and memory of the data center at the disposal of the individual user. Because the GPU is virtualized—it runs in the data center—the user can access it from “virtually” anywhere, given a suitable network connection and a client device. Configurations based on NVIDIA GRID GPUs support multiple GPUs per graphics card and multiple graphics cards per server, so that there are also some consolidation benefits here.

The optimal solution for advanced graphics acceleration is the Virtual Graphics Acceleration Unit (vGPU) model. With performance that can approach the level offered by vDGA, and a consolidation ratio (low cost per user) like that of vSGA, vGPU is proving to be an increasingly popular solution for enterprises that support large numbers of engineers, designers, and other users who require advanced graphics applications.

Of course, this paper also offers installation and configuration instructions and tips for troubleshooting. But wait, that is not all! Although the concepts are clear, the sizing and performance figures are based on the very powerful NVIDIA Kepler series graphics cards. We are happy to announce that we are working closely with NVIDIA to test View graphics on the even faster and more powerful NVIDIA Maxwell series cards, also known as GRID 2.0.

More information is on the way! In the meantime, the Deploying Hardware-Accelerated Graphics with View Virtual Desktops in Horizon 6 white paper should be useful for anybody contemplating or updating the infrastructure for an advanced graphics environment.

Business mobility (also referred to as enterprise mobility) is a trend that is fundamentally redefining the nature of the workplace, its technology, and even how, when, and where people work. For Noah Wasmer, VMware senior vice president of mobile engineering and product management, End User Computing, this is the exciting future that is rapidly emerging today. A future characterized, he says, by “a new ecosystem of partners, customer ideas, and new app ecosystems that are allowing us to deliver services that we never thought possible.”

Looking back on 2015, Wasmer says it was “a phenomenal year.” A year highlighted by major VMware product releases and initiatives dedicated to helping customers embrace what he calls, “this new idea of business mobility.”

“We’re helping users not only get access to their apps and services,” Wasmer says, “but also reimagine their workflows in new, delightful, and efficient ways.” And of the year ahead he says, “We’re going to continue to accelerate into 2016 with a host of new opportunities for us to help enterprises embrace mobility as a core platform for innovation.”

Watch the video to hear more from Noah Wasmer about how 2015 was a year to remember in enterprise mobility.

Looking into 2016, Wasmer cannot hide his excitement. “We’re continuing to scratch the surface of what’s possible,” he says about enterprise mobility. But he predicts that will change this year: “2016 is going to be a tipping point for helping enterprises embrace mobility.”

Wasmer points to a series of fundamental trends, beginning with a redefinition of mobility itself, that are accelerating this transformation. “It’s not just a tablet and a phone anymore,” he says, “but every device that an employee uses to access corporate resources.” He predicts these devices will make a dramatic impact on the way we operate in the business world.

Wasmer envisions the potential to “leverage all the enterprise assets and data that are available on-premise, or in the public cloud, and bring them together securely and simply, delivering users the right information, at the right time, for better insights, better decision-making, and actually, a thoughtful, enjoyable experience.”

“That’s the promise of mobility,” he confidently predicts, “that we believe will be delivered in 2016.”
