As we reported on Monday, VMworld kicked off with a bang this weekend at our annual Partner Exchange Conference. Over the course of two jam-packed days, Partners soon learned the perks of arriving early. PEX offered attendees exclusive access to VMworld announcements, break-out sessions, executive group discussions, and powerful presentations from top executives on how to capitalize on opportunities in VMware’s key growth areas.

Missed the event and feeling a little left out? Let’s get you up to speed.

A Software-Defined Future

If there’s one take-away attendees left with, it’s that the future of business and IT lies with a software-defined approach. Everything from the Partner Exchange boot camp sessions to CEO Pat Gelsinger’s presentation reiterated this. And now VMware is making it even easier for Partners to enter the software-defined future with the announcement of VMware’s new Cross-Cloud ArchitectureTM. Your customers can run, manage, connect, and secure applications across multiple private and public clouds and devices.

VMware’s Cross-Cloud ArchitectureTM builds on its leading private and hybrid cloud capabilities by offering customers the freedom to innovate in multiple clouds, and is delivered through VMware Cloud Foundation TM, a new set of Cross-Cloud services that VMware is developing and the vRealize® cloud management platform.

Lead Customers into the Future

How will VMware Cloud FoundationTM help your customers drive their digital transformation?

  • Natively integrated software-defined stack that brings together VMware vSphere, VMware Virtual SAN and VMware NSX® with unique life-cycle automation capabilities.
  • Flexibility to deploy on-premises across multiple pre-qualified hardware partners including QCT, Dell, VCE, and HPE or deploy as a service from select VMware vCloud Air Network partners.
  • Flexibility to deploy on-premises on integrated systems from VCE or leveraging qualified VSAN Ready Nodes from QCT, Dell and HPE and networking from Cisco and Arista, or deploy as a service from select VMware vCloud Air Network partners, including IBM Cloud.

Even better, there’s a 6-8x times faster time to market, it increases admin productivity by up to 2x by automating day-two operations, and reduces overall TCO of private cloud deployments by up to 40 percent.

VMware Cloud FoundationTM isn’t the only exciting news to come out of Partner Exchange at VMworld. Partners heard all about new VMware solutions including VMware vSphere Integrated Containers and VMware Integrated OpenStack that give customers the fastest path to run cloud-native apps and OpenStack based clouds. We also announced new digital workspace capabilities with VMware Horizon® which enables customers to quickly deliver virtualized desktops and applications through a single platform, creating a secure digital workspace.

Stay up to date on all product announcements with the new Quarterly Launch Resource page on Partner Central. It’s your one-stop shop for all Q3 product launch related materials, giving you the info you need to capitalize on VMware’s newest technologies and solutions. The second industrial revolution was about the early forms of mass production. The third industrial revolution was about electronics in the form of the computer. But the fourth revolution we think is going to be huge, because it’s going to influence every part of our lives.”

The fourth being the world going digital, that is. That’s how Sanjay Poonen, executive vice president and general manager of end-user computing at VMware, kicked off the general session at VMworld yesterday.

In case you missed it, watch the general session replay here.

But what really had the tech industry buzzing: unified endpoint management and Windows 10.

  • BizTech:VMworld 2016: VMware Promises Unified Approach to Windows 10 Endpoint Security
  • Enterprise Apps Tech: “VMware announces new unified endpoint management and Windows 10 support”
  • TechRepublic:“VMworld 2016: New unified endpoint management could make it easier to manage Windows 10 devices”

Check out our VMworld notes on the highlights from Sanjay’s keynote address:

  • Not all apps are web and mobile. Much of the world is still client-server, Windows-based. VMware Workspace ONE brings together the Apple-Google-Microsoft ecosystem.
  • End users want choice and simplicity. IT wants control and security. Workspace ONE eliminates the user-IT divide.
  • The Workspace ONE approach includes three pillars: 1) apps and identity (identity is the center of everything), 2) desktop and mobile and 3) management and security.
  • On the desktop side, VMware Horizon recently added hundreds of capabilities to tackle two things: cost and complexity.
  • For Windows 10, VMware aims to reduce costs by 15–30%, about $7,000 per endpoint per user, with unified endpoint management and security and lifecycle automation.

Zebra Technologies Saves Millions Leveraging Hybrid Cloud for 700+ Acquired Applications

By Laura Ortman: VP and GM, vCloud Air – Cloud Services at VMware

VMworld 2016 has been nothing short of amazing and we’re only two days in! On Monday we made several exciting announcements around Hybrid Cloud Manager, Hybrid DMZ and Identity Federation support. Each of these enhancements speak directly to the challenges customers have expressed to me and we’re excited to roll out solutions to address them. One customer who came to us in need of a solution for their business pain points is Zebra Technologies.

Zebra Technologies builds solutions that identify, track and manage critical assets, people, and transactions. By doing so, Zebra creates a digital footprint allowing their customers clear visibility into their business. A critical factor in Zebra’s success is the IT infrastructure that supports all the products and services offered to customers.

Zebra Technologies is one of many customers at VMworld sharing stories of impressive IT transformation with VMware – theirs is a story of thinking fast, thinking big and executing with vCloud Air, a public cloud that enables the benefits of hybrid cloud.

In 2014, Zebra Technologies acquired part of Motorola Solutions’ Enterprise business for $3.45 billion. The merger quadrupled the size of Zebra’s organization, tacking on an additional 4,500 employees and 700 business applications overnight. It also added a massive legacy hosting expense until Zebra’s newly-purchased products were vacated from Motorola data centers.

At the time of the merger, Zebra was already looking for larger locations for internal production workloads in their North American data center. The sudden influx of Motorola business applications complicated matters. The fact that Zebra didn’t know how the new business applications were used, how large they were or what their hosting requirements posed a serious logistical challenge, even for a company that builds logistical solutions.

Luckily, Zebra had something critical going for them: they were familiar with VMware virtualization. Prior to the merger, Zebra had virtualized their server environment on the VMware vSphere platform. This experience gave them the insight they needed when it came time to build out a migration plan for the acquired assets. They realized they could move the applications from Motorola’s data centers and onto their own – fast – by creating a scalable environment for migration.

Zebra determined that a hybrid cloud would allow them to extend their private environment to the public cloud and start migrating apps without worrying too much about hosting requirements. In fact, this model would even allow Zebra to stage migrations while proceeding with private cloud upgrades.

Managing this, of course, was complicated and not without its own issues. Zebra needed a public cloud to work seamlessly with its private cloud. Zebra also needed to move workloads without any issues and without having to translate disk images. Lastly, Zebra needed to do this while working on other mission critical tasks, such as building out the infrastructure to support the newly-acquired apps.

With testing and evaluation, Zebra found that VMware vCloud Air was the best public cloud option by a wide margin. VMware provided the hybrid cloud environment Zebra needed and outperformed its competitors by sevenfold. Zebra went into preproduction.

In less than a year, theIT team managed two incredible feats: Zebra moved or decommissioned most of the Motorola apps, thereby reducing daily hosting costs by more than 98%, and they did it all while expanding and improving their infrastructure.

By housing the Motorola apps, vCloud Air literally bought Zebra more time. This time enabled Zebra to analyze their options and figure out the right moves in a fast-moving environment creating huge value.

Beyond just the initial migration solution, vCloud Air gave Zebra a unified hybrid cloud. This makes for a seamless workload movement and a single go-to resource for troubleshooting.

Now, the Motorola app integration is essentially done. Zebra has moved on to focus IT efforts on developing self-serve infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) capabilities. Zebra is basing them on VMware’s vRealize suite automation and operation management features.

Once this solution is in place, Zebra customers will be able to go to the Zebra store and configure their own server with a few simple clicks. It won’t matter if they choose a public or private cloud —an automated approval and provisioning process will spin up the server they requested and start metering and billing. At the core of Zebra’s ability to roll out this self-serve IaaS functionality is vCloud Air, a secure public cloud platform offering compute, storage, networking, disaster recovery, and more.

David Davis on vRealize Operations – Post #29 – Top #VMworld 2016 Cloud Management Sessions – Not to Miss!

Every year at VMworld there is a tremendous bilateral knowledge exchange between VMware experts and VMware users. AtVMworld 2016, the knowledge exchange is no different but the technology and topicsare.

As more and more companies continued to push up the utilization of their virtual infrastructure and are looking for ways to make it more efficient, cloud management and automation has a hot topic.

Those cloud management topics include performance, capacity, troubleshooting, automation, orchestration, and hybrid cloud. For someshops, these topics apply primarily to their vSphere infrastructure, today. However, for many companies cloud management now includes not just vSphere but everything that makes your datacenter infrastructure possible – storage, compute, networking, applications, databases, and public clouds.

With all that in mind, I’ve come up with my list of “must see” VMworld 2016 sessions from the content catalog. If you’re going to VMworld, make sure that you add these to your scheduler builder from the content catalog. If you can’t make VMworld, no worries, the sessions are usually recorded and available after the show.

With hundreds of great sessions, I don’t like to say that “these are the best” sessions as 1) I haven’t seen the session yet2) there are 184 sessions with the keyword “vrealize” and 79 with “vrealize operations” 3) some might get the idea that other sessions aren’t as good as these. So instead, I’ll say…Here are the cloud management sessions that *I*want to attend and that look really good to me. I think you’ll find somecool sessionshere!

(sorted in chronological order)

The KISS of vRealize Operations! [MGT7718]

Chima Njaka, Group Product Line Manager, vRealize Operations / vRealize Log Insight, VMware
How can you troubleshoot across the multiple domains, applications, and infrastructure layers? It’s not easy without the right tools, but with VMware vRealize Operations you can do it. Some feel that vRealize Operations can sometimes be overly “expert friendly” and overwhelming. We will dispel that myth and help you recognize the power and simplicity of vRealize Operations through demonstrations. A technical session with very few slides, this is a must for anyone in a VI admin or “firefighting” role.

David’s Take

vRealize Operations is an amazing platform from the perspective of itsextensibility. The sessions above show how you can take it from simple performance/capacity management and use it for advanced troubleshooting, managing the SDDC, and the enterprise cloud. If I had to just pick one to attend, I’d want to see the session about using vRealize Operations to monitor VMware’s OneCloud, with over 100,000 virtual machines. The lessons thatcould be learned from that would surely be useful for managing / monitoring just about any enterprise infrastructure, no matter the size.

Recent VMware research exposed a large disconnect between business leaders and IT decision makers (ITDMs) regarding IT security. Our interactive infographic also revealed that while this disconnect is global, some countries are doing a far better job at bridging the gap than others.

With these findings in mind, we recently asked people on the frontline of IT security in the modern business about the challenges they are facing. Take a look at our infographic below to learn the top IT security risks facing businesses, and how ITDMs are working to combat them.

The New Era of EUC Is Here: Introducing Unified Endpoint Management

As we’ve worked with customers over the past 10 years, we’ve been fortunate to play an integral part of this industry progression. We also know security, identity and business analytics must be integral to these platforms to meet the demands and needs of our customers going forward.

When you consider the silos and fragmentation between mobile and desktop management, IT has too many EUC technology stacks to manage effectively—especially with all the IT silos that go along with this disparate approach. The way we use mobile devices and especially laptops changed significantly in the past several years. Unfortunately, current PC lifecycle management tools do not meet modern needs, and there are always issues regarding security, cost and compliance. I’m excited to say that today at VMworld, the next evolution of EUC is here.

What Is Unified Endpoint Management?

UEM technology brings an enterprise’s entire EUC environment together in a meaningful, transformative way. No more stacks, no more silos, no more redundancy. Just one technology architecture to perform all the functions above in a better way.

With VMware’s new UEM technology, announced today at VMworld in Las Vegas, we finally deliver a new architecture that brings app, desktop and mobile management together—with next-gen security and identity interwoven throughout. The end result is a simpler, more secure digital workspace architecture for IT and a powerfully transformed experience that makes it possible for users to finally love their work.

The New Era of EUC

In our press release this morning, we announced several new technologies that make UEM a welcome reality:

1. Configuration Management

VMware’s new technology advances Windows 10 management for all devices—mobile, desktops and laptops. Regardless of whether devices are on or off the network, IT can orchestrate configuration policies and settings to all Windows 10 devices—fast. Instead of taking weeks or even months waiting on a device to get back on the corporate network or VPN, admins can push patches and policies to devices in a matter of seconds. This not only streamlines management, but also helps improve an enterprise’s overall security posture.

Dive into these features and more at windowsuem.com.

2. Transforming Software Distribution

New VMware technology consolidates all applications into a unified, self-serve app catalog. For IT, this new approach unifies modern web and native apps, along with virtual and even Win32 applications. This way users have one consistent experience to access and download applications and the built-in single sign-on (SSO) and one-touch access to apps from a single catalog improves the overall experience and workforce productivity.

3. Application Packaging with App Stack

App Stack, another new VMware technology announced today, was purposefully designed to help IT overcome complex packaging, unreliable installations, recurring OS imaging and more. Now with App Stacks built into Software Distribution, IT can significantly reduce packaging complexities and provide a more reliable and less intrusive way to deliver Win32 applications out to physical devices. App Stacks is a variant of an existing technology that has proven itself to be widely successful in virtual environments over the past decade.

3. Reinventing OS Patch Management

Goodbye, Patch Tuesdays! New OS Patch Management capabilities enables IT to flexibly manage OS updates and patches, get detailed inventory, and perform compliance auditing of individual Windows KB updates. All of these features can be fully done from the cloud without any need for traditional Windows Systems Update Service (WSUS) infrastructure to manage.

4. Enhanced Client Health & Security

Designed to combat modern challenges of small and large-scale cyberattacks, enhanced client health and security technologies complement Windows Information Protection policies. Using this new tech within the UEM architecture, IT admins can:

  • Designate trusted apps with permissions to open or encrypt work data.
  • Configure “safe locations” for corporate data protection.
  • Create flexible enforcement levels to either allow or disallow user groups from moving and/or sharing data between work and personal devices and apps.

We look forward to delivering these new technologies to help your enterprise embrace the new era of UEM. If you want to get early-access information, please sign up for these details at windowsuem.com or visit us at future events this year—AirWatch Connect and VMworld Barcelona.
