To start off with the new week we have a new video which will demonstrate our View Composer API for Array Integration in VMware View 5.1 which is currently in a "Tech Preview" state. "Tech Preview" means that the feature is experimental and should only be used in a test and development environment. For more details read about VMware Experimental Feature Support.

Essentially what the feature allows you to do is to offload the creation of the linked clones which back your View desktops to the storage array, and let the storage array handle this task. The main advantage of VCAI is an improvement in performance and a reduction in the time taken to provision desktops based on linked clone pools. This task can now be offloaded to the array, which can then provision these linked clones natively rather than have the ESXi host do it.

This video features our friend Cormac Hogan who is a Senior Technical Marketing Architect for Storage here at VMware. You can read more concerning this topic in: A closer look at the View Composer API for Array Integration [incl.

Today we have a new video for you which discusses and demonstrates how to open a command or shell prompt on a Windows-based system, a Linux-based system or a Mac OS-based system as well showing you how to connect to a system using a Secure Shell or SSH connection.

The process of opening a command or shell prompt is a required step in many of our KB articles. We realize this is very basic stuff for many of you, but many others have asked for this, and we're happy to oblige.

For additional details relating to this process check out VMware Knowledge Base article Opening a command or shell prompt (1003892).

Here is a video for you which discusses and demonstrates how to test network connectivity between different components of your network using the Ping command.

In this tutorial you will specifically see examples of a ping command being executed from within a Windows-based virtual machine, a Linux-based virtual machine and also from a SSH session to an ESX host using the Putty SSH Client.

All of the virtual machines used in this demonstration were running on VMware Workstation 8, but the same process can be applied to any of your operating systems running within your virtual environments and even on your physical machines too!

This video is based on VMware Knowledge Base article Testing network connectivity with the ping command (1003486).

Today we have another new video for you which focuses on our VMware Fusion product. This video discusses and demonstrates how you can install a Windows operating system inside of a VMware Fusion 4 virtual machine using the Easy Install feature.

VMware Fusion has a feature called Easy Install, which makes it faster to install Windows based operating systems inside virtual machines.

For additional information see VMware Knowledge Base article - Installing Windows in a virtual machine using VMware Fusion Easy Install (1011677).

If you are a VMware Workstation 8 user and are a fan of the Fedora 16 operating system, then you may be interested in this video tutorial which discusses and demonstrates the processes regarding how you can install Fedora 16 as a guest operating system in a virtual machine running on VMware Workstation.

This video shows the process for performing a manual install as well as demonstrating how the Workstation Easy Install feature can automate some steps in the installation process for you.

The Easy Install feature in Workstation 8.0.1 and earlier was not compatible with Fedora 16 so if you are running a version of Workstation prior to version 8.0.2, then you will have to perform a manual installation as the Easy Install process will not work.

Well, enough talk, here is the video. If you require additional information be sure to check out VMware Knowledge article Creating a Fedora 16 virtual machine in VMware Workstation 8.x (2011162).
