Partners, this one’s for you. New this year, we will have a recording studio set up in the Partner Lounge with ALL the equipment and set-up you need to create your very own VMworld video.

Think about it. This could be the coolest tchotchke / swag item you walk away with from the event.

There are 4 simple steps you can take to book the room, create the video, and share your clip on our VMware Partner Network social network sites and your own.  

Here’s how it works:

  • First come, first serve, so book early by showing up to the Partner Lounge located on the Moscone West 3rd Floor Atrium Lobby on Monday morning.  You’ll have access to the Video Blogging Room, equipment AND on-site assistance should you need help. The room will be available Monday through Wednesday from 11:00am-3:00pm. Please note that we can only allot 1 video per partner.
  • Set aside about 30 minutes for the set-up and video recording.
  • The subject is up to you with potential talking points being: What will you be demoing at your booth? Is it your first time at VMworld? How have you innovated with VMware? How has VMware changed your business?
  • After you have completed your video clip, we will edit the video and send the final file to you shortly after VMworld for you to leverage on all of your sites. We will also add it to a playlist on VMware Partner TV.

Doug SmithI just spent a fews days in Las Vegas catching up with my fellow Channel Chiefs at the CompTIA Breakaway 2012 conference. CompTIA is an organization that acts as the voice for the IT industry and its members are from companies at the forefront of innovation. Its mission is to  advance industry growth through educational programs, research, professional certifications, and networking events like the conference in Las Vegas.

 A conference highlight was when CompTIA President and CEO, Todd Thibodeaux, opened the Tuesday discussion with a view of where CompTIA is providing leadership; in education, certification, advocacy and philanthropy.


Education and certification were hot topics that  came up again and again. This is where CompTIA shines, helping partners and vendors work together to solve problems that are common to all of us. They are leading the way developing learning paths and communities that we can all leverage. From Healthcare, to SMB, to Security, CompTIA has organized communities that are market relevant to the customer, partner and vendor. The Cloud/IaaS community is also starting to get some attention.

At the Channel Chief Power Panel session, I joined Janet Schijns from Verizon, Sheila O’Neil from Panasonic, and Raja Sundaram from Cisco to discuss what trends we are seeing in the partner community. The big points of discussion were 1) the altercated movement to the cloud and 2) the consumerization and proliferation of end points. End points aren't just phones, tablets, and laptops - they are any device that uses an IP address - often machine to machine devices. Overall the panel felt that both partners and vendors need to focus on deepening the relationships they already have in order to achieve their goals in these areas. 

The next industry event on my agenda is the CRN XChange conference in Texas, August 18 – 21.  After that, my focus will be on our biggest customer event of the year, VMworld San Francisco. Although VMworld is a customer event, our partners can get tremendous value by registering for the Partner Track, as well as taking advantage of  great discounts on training

Doug SmithI spent a few days at the Mitel Business Partner Conference in San Diego last week delivering a keynote presentation and learning about the future of Unified Communications (UC). A major focus for VMware and our partners this year is virtualization of business critical applications; like Oracle or Microsoft Exchange. A major focus for Mitel this year is virtualizing UC. Can you think of a more business critical application than your communication system?  

 The 1,500 Mitel Partners that descended upon San Diego last week learned how VMware and Mitel are working together to virtualize UC. From the virtualization of server based applications like voice mail and call recording; all the way to desktop applications like Mitel UC360 Collaboration Point, we are working together on end to end virtualization of UC.

Mitel is a strategic VMware partner and a longstanding VMware Technology Alliance Partner (TAP). We collaborate on development to create innovative virtualized solutions for the UC market. In the field, Mitel leads with virtualization when selling their UC solutions, and drives VMware through mutual VMware resellers.

As an example, the CEO for Casa Grande Regional Medical Center, Rona Curphy, revealed how the company moved from a dated physical PBX to a new Mitel system built on Casa Grande's VMware foundation. Not only did the new solution lower their costs, it added enhanced functionally to their communications systems that they had not envisioned.

If you are an IT infrastructure solutions provider or a communications solutions provider the message from Mitel executives and industry luminaries like Gartner’s Tiffani Bova is clear. There is massive convergence between the infrastructure and communications platforms and virtualization is the foundation to make this happen.
